validationBoth the PPL and LAPL last a lifetime. On a PPL ratings expire and so must be renewed. For LAPL license holders SEP is considered a separate licence that expires and therefore an SEP rating is not printed on the re-validation page of a LAPL. LAPL holders have a logbook that is updated.
SEP Licence Renewal or Revalidation?
The Civil Aviation Authority use specific terminology when it comes to keeping a SEP licence current. Re-validation means that the rating / licence has not yet expired. A renewal refers to a rating / licence that has already expired and needs to be reinstated. The requirements for each situation are different.
Revalidating A Current SEP Licence (LAPL Holders)
This is as per the PPL process described above. except in this case the examiner will validate your logbook.
Renewing An Expired SEP Licence (LAPL Holders)
LAPL is as per the expired PPL process above. However the requirements can be met over the preceding 24 moths as opposed to 12 months and the logbook is signed instead of the licence.
SEP Legal Requirements
It is the responsibility of the pilot to ensure that their SEP rating is current and that they are legal to fly. Failure to do so could lead to prosecution. It is also worth remembering that in order to carry passengers with any licence the pilot in command must have completed at least 3 take off and landings in the last 90 days. These landings can be solo or dual.
