Sponsored Flight Instructor Course

Our Sponsored Flight Instructor F.I.(A) Course provides the necessary training for the issue of the UK CAA Flight Instructor Certificate for aeroplanes. While offering financial assistance for valid pilot licence holders looking to train to become Flight Instructors.

Successful applicants will receive the following:

  • A £4000 contribution – towards your training costs, of which will we deducted from your salary in monthly instalments on completion.
  • Part Time Employment Offer –  on completion for an initial period of up to 12 months, with the possibility to extend.

This course allows the holder to deliver ab-initio pilot training. Upon successful completion and the assessment of competence being passed the candidate will be issued with an FI(A) certificate with privileges restricted in accordance with FCL.910.FI.

FI(A) Privileges

Upon issue the FI(A) certificate will be restricted but this restriction can be removed once the experience requirements have been met. Whilst restricted an FI can only conduct flight instruction under the supervision of an unrestricted FI. The restricted FI can provide instruction for:

  • The issue of the PPL and LAPL
  • All integrated courses at PPL level, in the case of aeroplanes
  • Class and type ratings for single-pilot, single engine aircraft with the exception of single-pilot high performance complex aeroplanes.
  • For the night, towing or aerobatic ratings.

Whilst conducting training under supervision the restricted FI shall not have the privilege to authorise student pilots to conduct first solo flights and first solo cross-country flights. The limitations shall be removed from the FI certificate when the FI has completed 100 hours of flight instruction in aeroplanes or TMGs and in addition has supervised at least 25 student solo flights.

Sponsored FI(A) Pre-Requisites

General requirements

  • You must be available to train 3 days per week minimum
  • You must pass a Pre Entry Flight Test And Interview
  • If you are successful, you must be able to start training within 2 weeks of you receiving your offer
  • You must be available to work 3 days per week on successful completion of the course.

CPL(A) Holders:

  • Hold a current SEP (Land) rating
  • Be at least 22 years of age
  • Hold a valid medical certificate appropriate to the licence held
  • Received at least 10 hours of instrument flight instruction on the appropriate aircraft category, of which no more than 5 hours may be instrument ground time in an FSTD.
  • Have completed 20 hours of VFR cross country flight on the appropriate aircraft category as PIC.
  • Have completed at least 30 hours on single-engine piston powered aeroplanes of which 5 hours shall have been completed during the 6 months preceding the pre-entry flight test set out in FCL.930.FI(a).#
  • Applicants for the FI certificate shall have passed a specific pre-entry flight test with an FI qualified in accordance with FCL.905.FI(i) within the 6 months preceding the start of the course, to assess their ability to undertake the course. This pre-entry flight test shall be based on the proficiency check for class and type ratings as set out in Appendix 9 to Part FCL.

PPL(A) Holders:

  • Have current or lapsed ATPL or CPL Exams completed.
  • Hold a current SEP (Land) rating
  • Be at least 22 years of age
  • Hold a valid medical certificate appropriate to the licence held
  • Received at least 10 hours of instrument flight instruction on the appropriate aircraft category, of which no more than 5 hours may be instrument ground time in an FSTD.
  • Have completed 20 hours of VFR cross country flight on the appropriate aircraft category as PIC.
  • Expect for an FI(A) intending to provide training for the LAPL(A) only the candidate must have passed the CPL theoretical knowledge examinations. These may be taken without completing a CPL theoretical training course and which shall not be valid for the issue of a CPL.
  • Completed at least 200 hours of flight time on aeroplanes or TMGs of which 150 hours are PIC.
  • Have completed at least 30 hours on single-engine piston powered aeroplanes of which 5 hours shall have been completed during the 6 months preceding the pre-entry flight test set out in FCL.930.FI(a).
  • Have completed a VFR cross-country flight as PIC, including a flight of at least 540km (300NM) during which full stop landings at 2 different aerodromes shall be made.
  • Applicants for the FI certificate shall have passed a specific pre-entry flight test with an FI qualified in accordance with FCL.905.FI(i) within the 6 months preceding the start of the course, to assess their ability to undertake the course. This pre-entry flight test shall be based on the proficiency check for class and type ratings as set out in Appendix 9 to Part FCL.

Training for your FI(A) certificate

The FI training course shall include:

  • 25 hours of teaching and learning theory instruction
  • At least 100 hours of theoretical knowledge instruction to include progress tests
  • At least 30 hours of flight instruction, of which 25 hours shall be dual flight instruction

Flight Training

The flight training for the FI(A) course comprises at least 30 hours of which 25 hours shall be dual instruction. The remaining 5 hours can be mutual flight, this is where two students fly together to practice flight demonstrations.

The flight training is taken from the LAPL(A) and PPL(A) syllabus. However there are some additional items which are designed to cover the needs of an FI(A).

Ground Training

The Flight Instructor course involves 125 hours of theoretical instruction, including at least 25 hours teaching and learning instruction. The remaining 100 hours will be theoretical instruction taken from the LAPL(A) and PPL(A) syllabus. This will include:

  • Air Law
  • Communications
  • Operational Procedures
  • Principles of Flight
  • Aeroplane General Knowledge
  • Flight Planning and Performance
  • Meteorology
  • Navigation
  • Human Performance and Limitations

Assessment of Competence

Once training is completed the student will need to sit an assessment of competence (AoC) with and independent Flying Instructor Examiner. This comprises both a flight and ground element. The AoC should be completed within 6 months of successful completion of the training course otherwise refresher training will be required.

How Much Does It Cost?

Pre Entry Flight Test – £350 paid on booking

In the first instance you must complete a Pre Entry Flight Test. This will be used to assess your ability to progress with the full FI course, but does not by any means guarantee successful completion of the full course, but will be the deciding factor as to if we allow you to continue onto the course.

 Sponsored Flight Instructor Course – From £11156.05 with flexible payment options *based on C152

2 x payments of £3578.02. The first prior to course entry. Your training will then be deducted from this credit balance until depleted upon which time you pay a the second payment of £3578.02.

£4000 Almat Contribution will be credited to your account after your second instalment had depleted.

Whats not included:

  • Pre Entry Flight Test
  • Upgrade costs associated with flying a larger aircraft such as C172 if needed.
  • Any additional training required.
